My “me+HP” & Epson moments

Back to technology and user experiences. I had a great customer experience day. Goodbye Epson Stylus 880. I will never buy another Epson printer ever again. First of all, there’s the chip in each of the cartridges that signals death after a certain period of time has passed, regardless of how much ink is left in there. Of course there are ways to hack it; there’s the fact that each ink cartridge is so bloody expensive — I think someone said somewhere that inkjet ink is 7x more expensive than champagne — and there are ways around that, too. But the main thing is I mainly print in black and white, usually reports, and for that purpose, it’s comparatively slow.

So today, I went to Staples and bought the CNet Editor’s Choice rated HP Laserjet 1320 laser printer for $200, which was half-price, amazing enough to begin with, but THEN, the out of box experience was fantastic. Did they have these kinds of experiences before Carly Fiorina showed up? Because I was able to read the picture based instructions and get the toner cartridge plugged in, drivers installed, and printed my test sheet within minutes. And I’ve always liked that you can send your empty HP toner cartridges back to HP: that’s a great program and it’s worth the premium. And did I mention that the shopping experience at the Staples was also primo? When they saw they were out of stock, the floorwalkers looked up inventory to check availability in area stores, called ahead to reserve a printer for me, and sent me to a nearby store to fulfill. That’s the way things should be, online and off.
