Notes from Nashville

Favorably impressed with the area, generally. To begin with, the airport is being renovated, which is a good sign, it was modern and rather easy to get in and out from, although only two security gates means potentially long lines during rushes. The Whitt’s BBQ pork sandwiches ($6) with the peppery hot sauce, which has a slow build and a bright peppery heat, at the airport bar in Terminal C, though small, are great. The traffic along 65 and 40 was awful, seeing the large, garish Confederate display just off 65 was appalling, but the suburb we were in was prosperous and seemed quite busy. The entire area seemed to be lush and green and at 86° yesterday, apart from surprise afternoon thunderstorms and a tornado warning that kept my flight locked down until 10PM, was otherwise quite beautiful, if somewhat humid.

I am finding validation for a joint business analysis/interaction design workshop format that allows stakeholders to participate in the design process, particularly for more needy or hands-on stakeholders who require more handholding. I know that sounds bad, but it seems to be that that is how you manage risk, using more user centered design techniques that allow the stakeholders to see the power and value of what it is we do in user experience by allowing them to participate and thereby “lend their power” to the session. As a side benefit, it also allows us to accelerate time to value right up front, instead of this game of pass-it-on requirements. Although yesterday’s session seemed to be more hashing out of the business rules than anything else. I think I managed to talk myself out of several hours of work actually.

Not till end of May actually. I was supposed to do the Cleveland, Nashville, Kansas City, Chicago circuit this week but went off the rails in Nashville and came back here where it has been nothing short of busy.
