The other day I watched my four-year-old niece show exactly how conversant she is with the web. She is conversant to the degree that she can input in her own name and password into a site, and knows what the major web conventions are, and can play games with relative ease. Kinda makes you wonder what else she knows. I feel I should run u-tests with her now.

Years ago when my oldest was 3, he figured out not only how to use Google to find Thomas the Tank engine, but to find pictures to print and then color. The part I was always amazed at was how intuitive it was for him to use a mouse. Got it right away, no explanation. I used to teach an intro computer science class and had adults who would point a mouse at the screen like a TV remote when I told them to “just point and click.” Amazing, imagine what it will be like for them in 15-20 years.

I sometimes still see people flip over and look on the back of the keyboard when I say the first step is to check the nut behind the keyboard. Somehow I suspect these people will still be around.

My sister’s cousin-in-law’s five year old is able to video chat on her parents’ iMac. She’s called my sister to talk to my 15 month old niece.
I remember taking computer classes in 2nd grade, and my sister and brother, 4 and 6 years younger than me respectively, started in nursery school, we did not have a computer at home. Of course, that was in the days of Apple IIcs.
