Any thoughts on why they have adopted this approach? You think your requirements are pretty typical? Sounds like being given the choice should be an option. Simply part of your customising settings

Basically, the issue is as follows: movies and media bought and downloaded from ITMS sync to the laptop, which is not what I want: I want those movies to stay on that hard drive, along with the media and everything else I have on there, and I want nothing to be on my laptop but apps and data. If you back up the movies, and delete them off iTunes, you also delete them off the AppleTV. That's not what I want. But maybe soon it'll all be on a cloud somewhere.

It's a bit kludgy to tell the truth. As a set top box it does fine for rentals and it's convenient to have the iTunes from our computers stream to the sound system, but when it comes to sync'ing media the system is pants, regrettably. I wish it would do what I want it to do, which is a bit different from what the studios and other rights holders would let me do, legally.
